A Basic Guide to Buying Organic Makeup

Lately, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of healthy living in a world free from the ravages of toxins and harsh chemicals. Food, quality of air, effects of pollution and global warming and even the benefits of using natural cleaning solutions instead of chemicals laced ones are some of the burning issues being addressed today. Amidst all these complexities, the beauty industry has led a silent revolution as more and more people today opt for products made with natural and organic ingredients.

Before buying organic beauty products, you should know what constitutes “organic”. Primarily, it is any product that does not contain chemicals, genetically modified items and is free from chemicals, parabens and phthalates. Hence, if you have sensitive skin which is prone to acne, break-outs and rashes, using organic products is a solution for you. Further, all organic makeup is free from animal testing, dyes and colors and is devoid of fragrances. Overall, organic products are sustainably sourced and available in reusable, biodegradable packaging.

The first step to buying organic makeup in Australia or for that matter anywhere in the world is to know the fundamental differences in the various terms used in this category. In organic makeup, 95% of the ingredients should be organic while for “made with organic” ones, 20% should be organic. Again, be careful when you see “natural” beauty products which are sometimes mistakenly treated at par with organic ones. This is because most “natural” ingredients are bleached, heated to high temperatures and deodorized, all of which makes them lose their natural goodness. Hence, be very careful when you are buying organic makeup.

One sure way of knowing that the cosmetic you are buying is 100% organic is to check the seal of approval from a cosmetic or organic certifier. The most reliable and reputable associations are Soil Association, COSMOS, QAI, ECOCERT, NSF, or the USDA organic seal. Products that are certified by these organizations have to confirm if there are any non-organic ingredients. Another way is to research the company and know about their ethics and production methods.

Finally, before buying any organic makeup, read the label for the list of ingredients which are usually in descending order. Hence, if there are any synthetic substances like Propylene Glycol or Dimethicone, ensure that they are on the bottom of the list. Search the Internet if you are not sure about the type of ingredient used in the organic beauty product that you are buying.
